Day 1 of DC

We’re here in DC.  It’s been a great adventure today!

We arrived at 630AM at Ritz Carlton.  The people are super nice.   I was feeling okay until we had to wait for the shuttle.   The shuttle service starts operating at 7AM-715AM.  We were getting antsy cuz it was so cold.   I felt really stranded.  Eventually the shuttle took us to eat at The Silver Diner.  We got some half eggs benedict.  I liked the flavor.  There was a hint of lemon in it.  After breakfast, we figured out how to get to the bus stop.  We got to the right stop, and right when we were boarding The Ritz called us back and said the room was ready for us to check in.  I figure it was okay that we wait until night time to check in.  So we  have pretty good impressions of the Ritz so far.  They even left us some dessert in our room that says, “Happy Anniversary” on it.  I guess the only downside is that it’s not close to a bus, so we had to figure out how to get to the metro.   I also thought it would be connected to the mall, but it’s quite a walk.

Our first stop after breakfast was to get Metro Passes.  We learned the system well!  We’re utilizing the passes as often as possible.  We exited Metro Center and walked to Union Station.  We passed by the spy museum and ford’s theatre.  We’ll be heading there tomorrow.  We saw Chinatown very briefly.  Urban Outfitters was written in Chinese!  After we stopped by Starbucks, we somehow made a wrong turn.  We got lost, and just ended up taking the shuttle to Union Station.  Oh, we had to head to Union Station to store our stuff.  Lame detour, but it was required.  The White House doesn’t allow any cameras, and we’re tourist so we had to take our camera.

After Union Station, we headed to the White House.   It wasn’t as neat as I thought it was going to be.  It was a self-guided tour.  I thought someone was going to take us around and show us more info on everything.  I think we walked through it for 20 mins, and that was it.  =/  A little disappointed, but hey we were inside the White House.

Then we went to Café Mozart.  This place is delicious!  We had German potato soup, potato pancakes with apple sauce, and the 5 sausage sampler.  I would definitely go back to this place.  It was very good portions and variety for just two people.  Go if you’re in the White House area.

The Kennedy Center was our next stop.  This was a long journey.  We went off the wrong exit.  Our directions from “Plan a Trip” were wrong!!!  My gosh, we ended up walking there.  *INSIDER TIP* : Take the Foggy Bottom / GWU exit and there’s a RED COLOR Kennedy Center shuttle.  It goes directly to the Kennedy Center.   A tour was scheduled, but it didn’t seem necessary.  People were walking up and still had tours.  They just had to show up before 4:30pm.  I love this place!  The tour lady, Carla, was super informative.  I learned so much about the Kennedy Center.  On our way out, we saw a poster for Lafayette.  It’s an opera.  We got tickets for Friday.  I can’t wait!!  =D

For dinner we went to Malaysia Kopitiam.   The tour books said they were cheap prices.  I guess they went in a group that’s why they called it cheap.  The portions are so large.  We’re used to ordering with more people so we had lots of leftover.  We got for an appetizer Fish ball, Tofu, and watercress in sweet & spicy sauce topped with sesame seed.  We finished this all up.  The fish ball was my favorite.  The overall dish had great flavor.  We also got the Curry Laksa Chicken Soup.  Spicy!  This was very good too.  We had them with egg noodle.  I never had it like that before.  The noodle texture was slightly chewy, but it was perfect with the curry.   We also ordered Char Kuih Teow.  Similar to pad thai noodles.  These were good too.  We had too much curry to work on, so I didn’t eat as much of this dish.

I’d say that’s it. The rest of the night was figuring out how to get home.  We walked along the street.  It was definitely not the safest way to get back.  We’re going to try a different route tomorrow.  Anyways we’ve been up since 6AM.  It’s midnight EST so time for sleep!   Till tomorrow.
