Happy 1st year anniversary!! Today was a great day! We made the bus on time, and everything else ran smoothly too. We got up early, and went to have breakfast at The Old Ebbitt Grill. We both got a Strata. It’s an open faced omelet served in an iron casket pan. Very nice. I thought it could use a little more flavor so I added a little pepper. It was perfect! This place was really nice. I bet people have lots of private parties here. It has an old English bar look to it. It was a nice hot breakfast for a rain pouring morning. We were drenched in ten minutes because the winds were blowing sideways. No worries, we kept our spirits up. =) After breakfast the sun came out, and we walked around all the monuments. We saw The Washington Monument, then Jefferson, FDR, non MLK yet, WWII, Korean War, Lincoln, and the Vietnam Memorials. We got very lucky because there was an 80% chance of thunder storms. It turned out to be a gorgeous day. Crazy huh? We brought sunshine to DC!!
After all the monuments, we went to the Engraving and Printing. That’s where all the bills are made. We took a picture of a stack of 500 million dollars. We also found out the largest amount on a bill ever was $500,000. They had some pretty neat souvenirs. I’m giving my parents some uncut bills. Oh yea, we also met a guy who makes more money than Bill Gates! He said so himself. =)
It’s already 430, so headed for dinner. We ate at the Blue Duck Tavern in Foggy Bottom. Very fancy I think. The guide book didn’t classify it as super fancy. They said it was neat that they had the kitchen right in front where everyone can see. That sounded really neat so we went to check it out. We went on a bad night because they were hosting a private party. They sat us anyways…outside. Mind you they open the restaurant up for dinner at 530. It was completely empty. I guess they couldn’t spare a chair. We sat outside because we were pretty lucky with the weather. It was windy, but we didn’t let that spoil dinner. I had the duck, and Doug and the ribs. They were soooo good! They gave us free cookies to take home because, um well just because. We have our thoughts, but I don’t know about them. Oh well. =P
Our early dinner was so we had enough time to go to the Kennedy Center. We saw the Lafayette Opera. The opera was different from what I thought operas were like. The opera was a poem by Milton, and music by Handel. I like the Allegro pieces more than the sad ones. It was a good one for Doug to begin with because he’s never seen an opera. Okay okay, I’ve only seen one other one, so it’s not much I can compare too. What made this opera different was there was an orchestra on the stage, and the opera singers come up to the stage when it’s their turn. Are operas usually like that? I thought they had some sort of plot. Hmm…I gotta check out more. The Kennedy Center has a terrace with great views of DC. Some reason those doors weren’t open today, but it would have been complete if we saw that. No worries, we have to save things for us to come back too.
This was a very good ending to our night. I am extremely tired. Another early day tomorrow. Buses are timed differently on weekends. We’ll see how things go. Oyasumi!
